Autumn Cleantech & Sustainability Jobs & Market Update (UK)

Autumn Cleantech & Sustainability Jobs & Market Update (UK)

The UK market continues to be very buoyant and we are picking up new environmental sustainability jobs on a regular basis.  Again the challenge for many employers remains the same, attracting candidates in a talent short market.

You don’t have to look far to see how many BREEAM jobs there are and Lewis Davey currently have a lot of BREEAM jobs across Leeds, Manchester, London, Birmingham and Bristol.  Sometimes these are packaged up as “Sustainability Consultants” and whilst, in some instances, there is a genuine opportunity to work on a greater diversity of projects, in a lot of instances the demand is being driven by BREEAM and this is why being an accredited BREEAM assessor is a pre-requisite for many.  Interestingly, we found it quite refreshing to speak to one international multi-disciplinary recently who said they just focus on BREEAM and they want candidates that are keen to focus purely on delivering BREEAM. They felt that this resulted in better quality of work.  In many ways, this is a USP on its own merit.   In the War for talent, having a strong USP is key.  Why would someone want to work for you over one of your competitors?

The challenges of recruiting BREEAM assessors is mirrored elsewhere within the sustainable construction market across energy strategy, SAP assessors, and even CfSH despite the fact its been phased out .  Elsewhere we are seeing similar problems around a shortage of talent within District Heating and, as a consequence, Lewis Davey is starting to look at importing talent from outside of the UK.  This has largely been driven by the funding the LA’s can get through HNDU.

Looking ahead we will continue to see ESOS driving the demand for Energy Consultants.  Whilst there has been significant marketing around ESOS, until recently the demand for talent has not supplemented that.  In the last two weeks alone we have spoken to numerous clients that are not experiencing demand.  Intermediate Energy Managers who has amassed a few years of experience are in short supply but we are working with numerous ESOS lead assessors and more experienced Chartered Energy Managers.

On the back end of SEUK, Rooftop Commercial Solar is also looking very positive with a rush for ground mounts continuing until the Spring.
