06 Jun New independent group to accelerate UK transport decarbonisation
A new independent group, the Council for Net Zero Transport, has been created to support the decarbonisation of the transport industry by providing professional advice and strategic support for the next UK Government.
The core objective of the Council for Net Zero Transport is to provide the next UK Government with a structured and defined strategy for delivering future policies. This group will influence national plans and provide a clear framework for implementing new policies at all government levels. The introduction of the new council is led by the non-profit Zemo Partnership, formerly the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP), which provided policy support for the government to accelerate road transport decarbonisation for the last 20 years.
The Council will be chaired by Lord Deben, the former chair of the Climate Change Committee (CCC). Collaborating with over 200 member groups, the Council intends to deliver a detailed roadmap to enable the decarbonisation of UK transport networks. This roadmap will include sectoral plans, detailing the best route to achieving net zero by 2050.
Lord Deben explains that the recent decision in the High Courts that the Carbon Budget Delivery Plan was unlawful emphasises the scale of the challenge for the next government. Progress on net zero is slowing and in some regions, has declined. The new council consists of experienced professionals, capable of delivering a strategy to strengthen the benefits available from this low-carbon transition.
Zemo Partnership explained that the group will produce regular progress reports, with the next update due in early September. Furthermore, an additional summit is due in October to connect the Partnership members and stakeholders and share the sectoral plans.
Claire Haigh, the executive director of Zemo, explains that whoever is next to lead the UK, the challenges for net zero remain the same. Transport represents the fastest growing market for emissions, so we must move beyond targets and towards delivering net zero transport.
