RWE confirms plans for a new UK energy project combining solar, batteries, wind and sustainable farming

RWE, one the largest renewable energy developers in the UK has announced plans to expand its solar business into the UK, with initial plans for a project to be constructed in south Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire. The UK project referred to as Tween Bridge Solar Farm, recently confirmed a capacity agreement with National Grid – a critical step in green energy development which intends to provide thousands of homes and companies with renewable electricity.

Located just east of Thorne, Tween Bridge Solar Farm has an agreement to deliver a potential generation capacity of 600MW, with a planned operational date of 2029. The project would be situated next to RWE’s existing Tween Bridge onshore wind facility, so no additional overhead power cable or other network infrastructure would be needed. Katja Wunschel, the CEO of Onshore Wind and Solar Europe & Australia of RWE Renewables, explains that solar combined with battery storage compliment their UK development portfolio, which generates 15% of the nation’s energy requirements. Wunschel explains that their strategy focuses on sustainability and the accelerated expansion of large-scale solar is part of their future vision.

Once complete, the land would host solar generation, battery storage, onshore wind and animal husbandry. The plans are for Tween Bridge Solar farm to become one of the biggest lowland sheep farms in the UK, and there are discussions about creating a bee farm on the land. Tween Bridge Solar is the latest project in planning for RWE. Its presence in south Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire includes onshore wind sites, offshore wind farms, the Humber Gateway and Triton Knoll.

Furthermore, the business is developing the Grimsby Hub, a large operations and maintenance facility offering specialist services to its offshore section and providing new jobs and apprenticeships for the local community. The plans represent a new effort to support our path toward net zero by delivering more clean, green energy. The next phase for RWE is performing detailed environmental surveys, and discussions have begun with landowners and planning authorities to determine the design and layout of the proposed site. RWE is committed to delivering a comprehensive consultation with local communities and other relevant stakeholders. Once the proposals are complete, RWE will submit a development consent order to achieve planning for the new project.
