February Jobs & Market Insight Update – Energy Management Special Focus

The rise of the “boutique” Energy Consultancy

It’s been an interesting decade in Energy Efficiency (yes, it really has almost been that long since I started recruiting in the Energy Management market finding Energy Managers & Energy Consultants jobs). 

In many ways we’ve seen a bit of a demise in the typical Energy Management Consultancy set up within the big multi-disciplinary and major environmental players. I think a lot of this was brought on by the recession but also by the rise of implementation and Energy Performance Contracting. 

The slack was taken up by the numerous FM groups – the JCI’s, Norlands, and ISS’s of the world.  Whilst the appetite for Energy Management from the Energy suppliers and the energy/FM teams within the Real Estate seemed to ebb and flow and change as quickly as the next restructure or change in department head.  And then you have got the OEM’s – there are a few interested parties. 

What I’ve noticed at the start of this year is that the smaller and dedicated Energy Consultancies may be starting to have their day.  Drawing from some of the slack in the market and a brighter climate, the demand for Energy Management talent that we are experiencing is coming from smaller, more nimble consultancy.   

Whilst budget, in some cases, can be a barrier to growth for some of these business, candidates can often expect more autonomy, flexibility and less bureaucracy.  There’s the opportunity to work in a growth business where Energy Management is the focal point.

So whilst I’m on the subject of Energy Management, here’s a few of the Energy Manager Jobs that Lewis Davey is looking to fill right now.

Senior Energy Management Consultant, London Centric (Home-Based), £40-50K + car + Bonus + attractive pension.

A Senior Energy Consultant or Energy Manager is required to join an innovative, nimble and high-growth Energy & FM start-up.  This is a career-progressive opportunity, where the successful applicant will have the opportunity to join a creative, solutions driven business providing Energy and Carbon Management Consultancy to a large and complex portfolio of buildings and estates.

You will be self-sufficient, comfortable sat in front of clients and upselling and managing accounts. As well as being comfortable in a client facing capacity, you should also be technically proficient – you will probably be a qualified engineers, ideally to degree level and preference will be given to those that are chartered Energy Managers and/or Engineers. 

You will have a comprehensive track record in carrying out Energy Audits, writing reports and project managing energy efficiency schemes through.    Knowledge and experience of Metering & Monitoring of energy data, concept designs, funding applications, behavioural change programmes and measurement and verification are all key considerations.

Energy Manager, London, £35 – 45K + Benefits

A compliance (CRC, EUETS) and M&T driven Energy Management role focused on the Health sector with a leading FM provider. 

We’re looking for Energy Managers who have as a minimum a science or environmental bias degree and/or ideally an Engineering based qualification. 

 Applicants should be able to demonstrate a few years of experience in Energy Management or Energy Consultancy where they have prior exposure to the CRC and other compliance based schemes within the energy efficiency context.

Renewables and Energy Engineer, London, c.£30 – 40K

Fascinating role working within real estate as a client base looks to get to grip with opportunities within renewables and energy efficiency.  Here we are looking for an M&E and, ideally, an electrical biased Energy Engineer who has prior experience of renewables and energy efficiency projects and implementing those across a portfolio of buildings.

Applicants should have prior exposure of energy audits, feasibility studies, building modelling, CRC, energy performance contracting (EPC) & Measurement and Verification
